Forngang A Ndenge
26 March 2021 | Michael Neba
The passage to the eternal glory of Pa Ndenge on 27 February 2021 has been announced. He was a biology teacher in GHS Mamfe in the early years, noted for his perpetual smile, gentle words, and voice. Untiring in his work in and out of the classroom, earned him the name “Boxer” (a character in George Orwell’s Animal Farm) from students. He was in school from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm, even on days he had no class to teach. You hardly find him in the staff room as he was somewhere on campus doing something, sweating under the typical baking Mamfe heat. His only shelter was a straw hat.
He had a characteristic love for nature.
He single-handedly planted all the trees and flowers around campus, most notably those in front of the auditorium and the circular space between the administrative building and the Science Lab, where his work with nature began. He cared for the plants as though they were human beings. A small hoe, cutlass, and watering-can were his regular companions. In one of his planting adventures around the boys’ dormitories, he saw a group of boys bathing. He approached with this appeal: the trees and plants need water. when you are washing hands or taking a bath do so by the plants so they can benefit from what your water as well”. This was his hearty hobby, a self-assigned, aside from his official assignments: Biology teacher and cultural club master.
Boxer took over the cultural club from Pa Ngwa Hans, the General Discipline Master (SG). He nurtured and elevated the club to typical traditional cultural heights. From small dancers with half-baked cultural attires to a full juju group often led into the display grounds by the GHS cultural club girls. GHS was always first place in the youth week competitions. The students crowned him “Father of Cultural Club”.
After 97 years of productive labor, Boxer has gone to rest.
May eternal rest and happiness above
Be the reward of his good deeds below!
